The process involved intimate, political and philosophical engagement in which I traced through nostalgia, feeling a deep sense of attachment to a memory, that involved lives and activities that were attuned with nature. Having been studying theoretical approach to sustainability during my Master’s degree in Creative Sustainability, I found it a good opportunity that I could learn about the decreasing demand for local wool, as is the case also in rural India. The material used in the project, which is mainly wool, came from a farm that had no use for it, which would have been otherwise disposed in the trash. The process of visiting the farm, interacting with the sheep, collecting soiled wool full of sheep dung, hay and dirt was enriching. The process further involved cleaning the wool by hand and carding to render it usable. In the installation, I have tried to show that process. The course offered a theoretical and critical approach to ponder on futures and utopias, and the freedom to explore issues that mattered to us deeply in our own disciplines. The sustainability challenge presented to us was the client’s need to improve physical education (PE) within Tanzanian schools. The client believed from earlier work that PE has a positive impact on girls’ empowerment, improved pupil health, and reduced absenteeism at schools. The proposed solution was a mobile application for PE teachers and toolkit called “Toolkit for Physical Education Teachers“ in Tanzania. It is meant to help them to better create sports equipment from the materials they have in their schools, including DIY tutorials. Wool, considered a sustainable, natural fibre, and nano cellulose are combined to create earth friendly materials for further application. Driven by a deep feeling of nostalgia and inspired by personal experiences, this project pays homage to my memory of a shepherd’s hut surrounded by humble sheep and the mighty mountains. By blending southern wool and northern wood-based cellulose, I discovered new textures and shapes with intriguing haptic properties. The processes of heating and pressing combined with a calcium chloride bath gave rise to shape and textures, resulting in experimental material studies conceived through nostalgia. Focusing on their lifestyle raised many questions regarding increasing impacts of globalisation, rapid urbanisation, tourism and social policy interventions by the government. It touches upon critique of existing ‘forced modernization’ in conditions of incomplete education regarding the importance of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and waste management, coupled with geographical diversity, specific socio-political and cultural factors (such as religious restrictions and social taboos). It is then extrapolated into a scale of conditions reflective of the subcontinent – specifically the myth of progress and ‘development-as-growth’ defined by the ability to purchase goods and commodities for everyday life. Through stakeholder mapping, the local women’s struggles with state menstrual policies, accessibility to alternative products highlight the existing structural issues. Interviews of women as well as the local doctors provide key insights into the situation from the locals' perspective which exposes the underlying relationship to women’s health and the ecosystem, the human and the non-human elements, farming and sustenance. These complex adaptive socio-ecological systems are highlighted in this case study. On one such wanderings, one of the artist in residence had discovered a quaint antique shop that they took me to. It that was brimming with everything from two-inch glass jars to antique tools and records. After examining some vintage cameras, I purchased one small box camera that was placed among home décor items, conveying the message that it was probably only good for display. There was no guarantee that it would function well. But I was drawn to it and decided to take a chance with it. The client believed from earlier work that PE has a positive impact on girls’ empowerment, improved pupil health, and reduced absenteeism at schools. The location has been transformed from a boring barren sea-side site to a thriving shopping- complex, designed for prioritising community interaction and local economy by engaging local inhabitants through co-creation.
